Extended warrantee caution

Read the fine print on your extended coverage policy before you try to recover costs of repairs that were done by yourself. Replaced my converter to the tune of $300. Very simple job but when I contacted my bumper to bumper extended coverage company, I was infoemed that they would not reimburse for any repairs done by the owner. Had to be completed by a licensed repairman. So, any repair that will exceed the $100 deductable will be done by a shop even though I could do it myself with lots less pain in the butt and a lot less expense to the insurance co.

RE: K-Z Sportster 36S3 Toyhauler

When we first purchased our Sportsman Sportster 2006 37Kx2, we liked it a lot. Since the warrantee has run out we have experienced the following that are real pains.
1. Had to replace brake linings on front axel because of faulty factory adjustment.
2. Decals blistered and shrunk badly. Factory sent out new set which were applied by a dealer. These blistered in one month.
3. Have had the fuel pump repaired three times. Each time it works for one fueling then quits.
4. Corner moldings and strip moldings have come loose in several places. The little brads just do not hold. Glue holds better. Also, in this vein, the joint tape between sections of paneling does not stick well and has to be re-glued.
5. Sliding mirror wardrobe doors will not stay adjusted and have to be realighned at every stop.
6. Several of the kitchen cabinet doors have warped and do not fit well now.
7. Several of the rivits that hold the skirting to the brackets have come out and had to be replaced.
I know that some will say that these are, for the most part, maintanance issues but we had our prior fifth for six years and never had these kinds of problems.
Oh yea, almost forgot, these just happened on our last trip - ended yesterday.
8. Had to replace a bad converter, then found out that the extended warantee does not cover any parts for owner repairs you have to call a professional.
9. Bedroom slide wiring shorted out and would not move in. Had a mobile repairman rewire around the factory job and then it worked (except for the four times when it blew a fuse). This is the same repairman that did not have a converter avalable. Final repair to be determined.

RE: See ya

Lucky you! We had to wait until the kids were gone to afford any toys and a hauler. Now we are enjoying that thing called a second childhood. Good luck.

RE: would you run retreads?

Not if I was the guy who never checked tire pressure and then ran down the road towing an overweight trailer at speeds that exceed the rating of the tire. Since I am not that guy I run retreads on the drive axel and virgin rubber on the steers. I probably will never have to replace any of these tires unless they check too badly in about 7 or 8 years.

RE: Post your tow vehicle pics here

rowekmr,
The Volvo is registered in Montana as a MH so has to have a 'frige, microwave and porta-pottie in back. That allows an AZ driver to avoid having a CDL and stopping at weight stations, log book, etc. This was not a big deal and there is lots of info out there about how to get it done. This particular truck has had the front tandem axel removed and the rear moved forward but that was only to reduce the number of tires on the ground and is not absolutely necessary. "T-Ruk" has 375/425hp (425 when in cruise to encourage its use for fuel mileage) and 1550ft torque. The trans is a Super 10 which has two gears in each position. I had never driven anything like that before but a couple of hours and I was float shifting like a pro - well, almost.
We get 9.0 - 9.5 bobtailing and 8.5 average towing our 39' toy hauler. If you would like more info, check here:
(Well, I was going to give you the Escapees forum url FOR hdt'S BUT DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT CLICKABLE http://escapees.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/frm/f/353102588 )
These guys are very knowledgable and willing to help with or share that knowledge.

RE: Street Legal ATVs

Yep, Horn (even a bike squeeze horn), brake light, license plate light and insurance are all that is required for street legal in AZ - love it!! There are dozens of folks, including us, in our little town that ride quads all over town. The biggest problem is the accelerated wear on off-road tires. Been trying to figure out where to find hiway tires that will fit a spare set of quad wheels - any suggestions welcome.
We have also ridden on streets in Marysvale and Richfield UT without any problems. Keep thinking about braving the challenge in Kalifornia but have not yet worked up the nerve. One would think that my AZ motorcycle plate would be just as valid in KA on my quad as it would be on a Harley.
BTW - MVD in AZ said no motorcycle endorsement needed for a four wheel vehicle.

RE: What am I missing in Quartzite?

Just got back from a second trip to Quartzite this year. Second time it was very quiet and peaceful.Lots of open space, free camping and ATV trails. That is our idea of a very good time.

Our "new" (to us) tow rig. Absolutely love it and also will never go back to the nervous towing with a pickup.

RE: Ford vs Freightliner

Went the same route. Started pulling our 39' KZ Sportsmen Sportster with a Dodge Cummins 2500. Pulled OK but a little spooky with quick stops. Upgraded to an International 4700. Stoping was better but did not pull as well as the Dodge (about same HP and torque but a lot more weight in the truck). Finally succumed to the dark side and went with a HDT. Nothing better than pulling a 20K# trailer with a vehicle built to haul 80K#. Fuel mileage pulling is about the same as the Dodge and the International. Save yourself time and money by going right to the top.

RE: Anyone use a ramp behind their TH to haul the extra toys?

Before we bought our toyhauler, a friend and I built a platform out of tube steel and metal screen that atached to our 27' fifth with recievers bolted to the frame. Itwas large enough to haul two mid-sized quads. The first version did not have a swivel wheel and did not bend at the receiver so it flexed pretty badly plus it changed the pin wieght dramatically. Next version had a swivel wheel and the tubes had hinges where they fit into the receiver. That worked much better. There is an outfit in Lake Havasu (don't remember the name) that builds one that is big enough to haul a Rino that sells for about $1,800.
The trick is to have a hitch that allows the platform to flex up and down independent of the trailer and a swivel wheel that supports a portion of the wieght.

RE: Utah Cancelled, Maybe Arizona Instead

Try here
http://www.rv-park.com/
Lots of trails on BLM and NPS lands. Need to be street legal to ride these. Altitude is about 3200 feet so it is about 10-15 degrees cooler than Vegas or Phoenix. Pretty scenic area with lots of Joshua trees. Folks in town ride everywhere on ATV's. Might be tough competing with boaters for a space on the 4th.

RE: Need help on matching tv with 5th wheel

Best advice in the replys so far is get the biggest truck you can up front. We started with a 2500 Cummins SRW that pulled great but was overloaded and did not stop well at all. Moved to a MDT but still did not feel that secure about the capability. Now we are comfortable and feel safe.
Jim:)
Hopefully edit will pick up new sig.

RE: What's your tow vehicle?

My International 4700 does a very good job pulling the KZ. If you look around you can find used MDT's with low miles a lot cheaper than a new dually pickup.
